Abrams’ “Lost” almost had a completely different cast
Synopsis
Survivors of a plane crash are forced to work together to survive on a seemingly deserted tropical island… J. See which A-listers missed out on one of the most popular TV shows of all time. Sawyer’s character was originally supposed to be an older, smooth, suit-wearing city slicker from Buffalo, New York. However, when Josh Holloway forgot a line during an audition and then kicked his chair in frustration and swore loudly, the writers liked the edge of Sawyer’s character and decided to write Sawyer as more of a southern, darker drifter. Jin and Sun are married, and their last name is “Kwon,” which becomes a major plot point in the final season. However, when Koreans get married, the wife never takes her husband’s last name.
Edited in Lost: The Journey (2005)
In fact, in Korea, it’s not even allowed to marry someone with the same last name, except in rare cases.. [repeat line] Desmond Hume: See you in the next life, brother.. The strange opening credits were designed by J.J. Abrams on his laptop in black and white as an homage to The Twilight Zone. With so many high-quality shows ending or being canceled recently (Friends, Frasier, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel), as well as the decline in quality of many others (The West Wing, Smallville), not to mention the extreme increase in sleaze and bland "reality" programming, I’ve almost written off TV as a means of entertainment. I seriously considered ditching my TV and cable subscription in favor of a computer screen and a broadband internet connection. Then came "Lost".
Now I’m excited
I missed the first few episodes, but was able to catch up thanks to BitTorrent. There are several things to like about this show, but here’s a short list: 1) Excellent, intelligent, diverse writing. There are multiple mysteries here, and for every answer you get, more questions arise. 2) Rich, complex characters. Just when you think you’re hooked on a character, you learn something new about them, often surprising or even shocking. I love watching the different relationships form and develop. 3) Strong performances.
Mira Furlan, Victoria Hamel)
This is a remarkable cast, mostly seasoned actors with a few newcomers, and they all turn in star-making performances. Even a few episodes have featured recognizable, talented actors (e.g. 4) Mysterious and captivating setting. Of the four main story elements you learned in school, plot, character, theme, and setting, the last one is often the poor, neglected cousin. It’s not here. The island is dangerous, beautiful, creepy, and undeniably intriguing. It’s like a character in itself.
I’m grateful to see this show be a hit
Part of the fun of this show will be uncovering the island’s secrets. 5) Thematic depth. This isn’t just a soap opera set on a desert island. There are rich metaphors and themes here, such as about moral challenges; about community and the nature of civilization; about our relationship with nature/environment; and about spirituality, even mysticism, as well. Too often lately I’ve committed to putting out a quality show early (“Wonderfalls” is the most recent and much-maligned example), only for a nervous network to cancel it prematurely. I hope "Lost" will be long and successful – if its creators, cast, and crew maintain the level of quality they have demonstrated so far, I am sure it will.
