With an estimated budget of €429 million, The Count of Monte Cristo is the most expensive French film of 2024
Synopsis
After escaping from an island prison where he spent 14 years for being wrongly accused of state treason, Edmond Dantes returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to exact revenge on the men who betrayed him. When Albert watches Hydee sing and play guitar, it’s quite obvious that she’s not even touching the strings half the time.
Starring in The Big Week: Episode #113 (2024)
It’s always difficult to approach something as complex as this novel and try to come up with a coherent film that presents all the plots, subplots, and sub-subplots, let alone the specific characters. I enjoyed Richard Chamberlain’s TV movie, and the 2002 film despite some plot cuts in both.
Even the 6 hour 23 minute miniseries from 1998 couldn’t tell the whole story and it’s been my definitive adaptation for 25 years
The fact is that in order to fit it into 3 hours, it was clear that certain plots were going to be cut, characters changed and the narrative streamlined. The question then becomes whether this was done in a way that allows those who don’t already know the story, those who have maybe read the book three or four times, and everyone in between to enjoy it.
Totally entertaining and never felt like a 3 hour movie
Clearly, the producers understood the underlying themes and (aside from one gripe I had that I won’t post as a spoiler) did the original a great service and still managed to include a few subplots I thought were going to be cut. Of course, if you’re a purist who hated Lord of the Rings because Peter Jackson changed characters and aspects of a 100% faithful adaptation of the book then you’re not going to like this either.
It also has a great soundtrack, the reprise of which kept me watching through the entire credits
