Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas’ longtime companion, later married former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy
Synopsis
Maria Callas, the world’s greatest opera singer, lives out the last days of her life in 1970s Paris, struggling with her identity and her life. Kennedy was the subject of an earlier Pablo Larrain biopic, the 2016 film Jackie, starring Natalie Portman. Maria Kallas: Book me a table in a cafe where the waiters know who I am.
I am in the mood for praise
Close-up reference: Why do we need the Venice Film Festival? (2024). I just watched the film at the film festival.
Our entire group was disappointed with what we watched
The plot was light for us, focusing on the last part of her life, and the main parts of the story related to how the events are connected were left out. We would go from one scene to another without a clear connection between the sequences. The focus seemed to be on Jolie posing for us, rather taking away from the charm of the real Maria.
There was a void in this version of Maria Callas
I get it – Angelina is great, but where was the spark? I never felt like I connected with the characters or felt like I fit into the film. At the end of the film, as the end credits begin, there are scenes of the real Maria Callas, full of personality and charisma that were unfortunately not portrayed in Jolie’s film.
Gorgeous costume designs, but that was it for me
performance.
